Honestly, in the beginning, I thought all of this "show" was ridiculous but I have changed my mind.  For a few of these kids, this will be their only time wearing a graduation cap and gown. 

On a side note, a lady behind me screamed her son's name when he walked across the stage (we were explicitly told not to do that).  She screamed so loud and shrilly that it scared Molly Kate.  Molly Kate started crying and cried for several minutes.  Everyone thought that was funny!
